The Tidings Brought to Mary



  • (L'Annonce faite à Marie) A poetic drama in thestyle of a medieval mystery play by the French poet and playwrightPaul Claudel (1868 - 1955). Often considered his best work forthe stage, it was first performed in 1912 in Paris, then seen in Londontwo years later in a production by the Pioneer Players under EdithCraig (see Craig family). It was not produced in Americauntil 1923, when its complex structure provided an opportunity forexperimental staging.

    The play is based on Claudel's earlier work La Jeune FilleViolaine, (1898). It involves Violaine, an innocent young womanwho contracts leprosy after miraculously curing a victim of the disease.
