the Tiv

  • Nickname for the Tivoli Music Hall in the Strand, London. Itwas named after the beer-hall that had previously stood on the site. The Tiv opened in 1890 but was unsuccessful until Charles Morton, the so-called Father of the Halls, was hired to manage it three yearslater. Under his direction it became one of the country's top musichalls. When this type of entertainment waned, however, the Tiv closedin 1914 and was demolished to make way for a cinema.
