The Voysey Inheritance



  • A comedy by Harley Granville-barker, first performed in 1905 atLondon's Royal Court Theatre, which he co-managed with J. E. Vedrenne. Therewas a revival at the National Theatre in 2006. The story involves an ethicaldilemma faced by Edward Voysey, a partner in a solicitors' firm in Lincoln'sInn. He is mortified to find that his father (the senior partner) hasillegally speculated with clients' funds and run the family business deep intodebt. When his father dies unexpectedly, Edward informs his family of theproblem and his intention to call in the police. They dissuade him from doingso, leaving Edward to tackle the problems on his own. His honesty andassertiveness win the love of Alice Maitland.
