- A London museum that opened in Covent Garden in 1987 to housematerials relating to drama, music hall, opera, ballet, circus, thepuppet theater, and even pop music. The Victoria and Albert Museumcreated the collection in 1974, when materials of the British Theatre Museum Association were transferred to the V&A to join those already held.
Until 2007 the museum maintained a permanent exhibition on the historyof the theater from the 18th century onwards, galleries for temporaryexhibitions, research and reading facilities, and a 70-seat theater.The items on view included playbills, programmes, scripts, costumes(including those of the Diaghilev Ballet), theatrical paintings andengravings, props, and stage designs. Special exhibits included theHinkins Collection of Toy Theatre sheets and the Anthony Hippisley Coxe Collection of circus materials.
Although a popular attraction, the museum closed to the publicin January 2007, when the V&A declined to renew the lease. Mostof the collections were transferred to the V&A in 2008 - 09.
