Theatre Royal



  • A title chiefly associated with two London theaters, Drury Laneand Covent Garden; it reflects the granting of Letters Patent totheir companies by Charles II in 1662 (see patent theaters). A third London theater, the Haymarket, adopted the title when it was awarded a patent in 1760. Many provincial British theaters later took the name Theatre Royal, notably those in Bath, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and York. the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, was for 20 years (1953 - 73) the home of Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop.
