• In ancient Athens, a state grant made to poor citizens to allowthem to attend the theater during the Dionysia. This smallfinancial assistance was introduced during the rule of Pericles. Afterbeing suspended by the Peloponnesian War, it was reinstituted in 394BC and continued until 338 BC.
