- Acronym for thermal resistor. A resistor which has either a known positive temperature coefficient or a known negative temperature coefficient. Thermistors are usually made of semiconductors, may have very significant temperature coefficients, and are generally in the form of a rod, bead, or disk. Used, for instance, in temperature measuring devices, or to compensate for temperature variations in other components. Also called temperature-sensitive resistor, or thermally-sensitive resistor.
