top-down reasoning

  • A method of reasoning or problem solving that first defines higher-level functions or tasks, and then breaks these down into simpler functions or tasks. This contrasts with a bottom-up approach, where the simpler functions or tasks are defined, and then this base is utilized to proceed to higher levels. Also known as top-down approach, or top-down design.
