  • noun a member of an urban underclass, working class or youth subculture characterised e.g. by tattoos, jewellery, sports clothes, etc. Like its near-equivalent, chav, the term came to prominence in the UK media in 2004. It had previously been used by teenagers in distinguishing youth ‘tribes’, also including goths, skaters, etc.
