  • In the early Middle Ages, a brief sung passage interpolatedin the Christian liturgy to illustrate the meaning of a particularfestival. It was a natural development from the chanted neumeand the beginning of the tradition of liturgical drama. Theearliest recorded trope featured in an Easter service at the Monasteryof St Martial at Limoges in the 10th century. The most famous tropewas the Easter Day Quem Quaeritis? a brief dialogue betweena priest representing the angel at Christ's empty tomb and three choirboysrepresenting the three Marys.
