  • Russian scientist and inventor who had the first modern ideas about spaceflight, especially the use of rockets for long space flights. ‘Beyond the planet Earth’, published in 1920, is his best-known book. He said that ‘The Earth is the cradle of mankind, but one cannot remain in the cradle forever.’
