  • A vacuum pump that uses a turbine that spins very rapidly to mechanically push gas molecules out of a chamber. A turbomolecular pump can provide ultra-high vacuums, and is usually used in conjunction with a mechanical pump. However, it is not especially effective with very light gases such as hydrogen and helium. Its abbreviation is turbo pump.
