ultraviolet light

Definitions

Astronomy

  • Light in the 5–400 nanometre wavelength band, between visible light and X-rays. Ultraviolet light does not penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere, so that ultraviolet astronomy has to be practised from space Being more energetic than visible light, UV carries information about hotter stars and more energetic galaxies and nebulae than does visible light. The International Ultraviolet Explorer has so far been the most productive UV observatory in space, although cheap balloon-borne experiments are also capable of yielding useful results.
