  • An assumption made in the construction of quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). The utility that subjects obtain from the quality of their lives must be independent of the quantity of life, or the utility attaching to a health-related quality of life in one time period must be independent of past periods' quality of life and of that anticipated in future periods.
