vacuum fluorescent display
- An alphanumeric or graphic display in which the emitted light results from a phosphor-coated surface being struck by electrons which are emitted in a vacuum envelope. The presented content is usually blue-green, but can be filtered to show other colors. Used, for instance, for instrument displays, those of audio and/or video components, indicators in automobiles, in calculators displays, and so on. Its abbreviation is VFD.
