• Electrons which are present in the outermost shell of an atom. Such electrons can move freely under the influence of an electric field, thus producing a net transport of electric charge. valence electrons also determine the chemical properties of the atom. Also called outer-shell electrons, peripheral electrons, or conduction electrons.
