virus hoax

Definition

Electronics

  • A non-existent virus which is nonetheless hyped as a grave danger. Typically, credibility is simulated by including a bogus warning from a governmental agency such as the FBI, or another entity with purported credibility, such as Microsoft. The time, bandwidth, and other resources a virus hoax wastes can rival or exceed that of most real computer viruses.
