voltage divider

General Science

  • noun a resistor or series of resistors that can produce voltages that are fractions of the source voltage.

  • A component, circuit, or device which is utilized to provide an output which is a desired fraction of the input voltage. For instance, a resistor, variable resistor, tapped resistor, or combination of resistors with taps, movable contacts, or junctions may be utilized for this purpose. Also called potential divider.
