Waiting for Lefty

  • A polemical play by the left-wing US playwright Clifford Odets. It was first performed in 1935 at the Group Theatre, New York; three yearslater it was presented with equal success at the Unity Theatre, London. Waiting for Lefty helped to raise the profile of drama as a medium for social comment.

The play consists of seven loosely connected vignettes, framed by a meetingof New York taxi drivers, who are deciding whether or not to strike. Issues raisedinclude the failings of the US medical system, the problems of an actor seeking work, and the ethics of manufacturing poison gas.
