  • noun a small computer file, placed in a website user’s browser so that the user’s actions can be tracked the next time he or she visits the site

    A file, usually a GIF image, which works with Web cookies to surreptitiously gather user information such as their IP number, what Web pages they visit, what type of purchases they make, and so on. Used extensively by certain online services such as America Online. The GIF image utilized may be visible or transparent. Also called Web beacon.
