- A single-crystal filament made of a metal, such as cobalt, or a refractory material, such as alumina. Such crystals feature very high tensile strength and temperature resistance. Also called crystal whisker.
- A thin and flexible wire used to make electric contact. Used especially in semiconductors. Also called contact wire (1).
- In robotics, a contact sensor consisting of one or more thin wires protruding from an end-effector.
