Wide-Field Infrared Explorer

Definitions

Astronomy

  • NASA satellite for infrared astronomy, using a 30cm telescope cooled by solid hydrogen. It was launched in 1999, but immediately developed a fault which meant its original mission of producing an infrared survey of the sky was abandoned. The satellite has since been used for an alternative purpose, as a long-term monitor of bright stars.
