Women Beware Women



  • A tragedy by Thomas Middleton, sometimes considered hismasterpiece; it was first performed in about 1621 in London but not publisheduntil 1657. The play was revived by the Royal Shakespeare Companyat the Arts Theatre Club, London in 1962.

    Set in Renaissance Florence, the play is based on historicalevents. Bianca Cappello, the wife of the poor clerk Leantio, is seducedby Francesco de' Medici, grand duke of Tuscany, who contrives herhusband's murder. The play ends with a scene in which the main charactersdie by drinking poison during a masque. The remorseful Bianca drinksdeliberately from the poisoned cup.
