  • A protocol utilized for the synchronization of data transmitted using asynchronous communications. Xon signals that it is okay to transmit, while Xoff signals a stop, as may occur, for instance, when the buffer of the receiving computer or device is full. In this example, when more buffer room becomes available another Xon signal us sent.
