zener diode
Definitions
General Science
- noun a semiconductor-based device used as a voltage regulator because the voltage across it is independent of the current through it
Cars & Driving
- noun
(written as Zener diode)
a voltage regulator diode in electronic ignition and alternator output circuits
Electronics
(written as Zener diode)
A pn-junction diode with high doping on both sides of the boundary, and which utilizes Zener breakdown to provide a given maximum voltage across it. A Zener diode has a breakdown voltage of a few volts, up to about six, while an avalanche diode usually has a much higher breakdown voltage, sometime several hundred volts. Used, for instance, as a voltage-regulator diode.
