• The basis of a zero reading for a particular temperature scale. The Kelvin temperature scale, for, instance, is based on absolute zero, so its zero degree reading equals absolute zero. Another scale is the Celsius temperature scale, which is based on the freezing and boiling points of water under certain conditions. A reading of 0 °C is equal to approximately 273.15 K.
