zone refining

  • A method or process utilized to purify solid or crystalline materials, in which sections of the material to be refined are heated sequentially. Each section is heated until melting, at which time the impurities present concentrate in the liquid portion. As the heated region progresses through the bar or slab, the impurities continue to be dissolved in the molten zone, with only highly pure material being recrystallized. There may be multiple molten zones working simultaneously across a given sample, and the process can be repeated for even greater purity. Used, for instance, to remove impurities from semiconductors. Also called zone melting, zone purification, or zone-refining purification.
